Project Strategy & Approach

The theme the class started with is the “The Otherside of the Healthcare Debate.”  I started the research process by investigating problems with the food chain in the United States.  I discovered the issues that stem from extreme mass production and the severe lack of quality across the country, specifically in fast food restaurants.

First I wanted to speak to female, young professionals, but beyond the target audience to anyone who makes daily consumption decisions.  I hope my project makes viewers step back and look at the quality of food they consume in the United States and consider alternatives that are more local, fresh and sustainable.

I looked to food experts for answers on the issue:  the writer of Fast Food Nation, Eric Schlosser, the founder of the Slow Food Movement, Carlo Petrini, and American chef, author and TV personality, Julia Child.  I used quotes from the food experts that would speak to each other to tell a story to address the issue.  Along with the quotes, I photographed my own images that reflect the quotes then edited them in Photoshop.  I used Photoshop to design slides, create movement in Flash, add a soundtrack with Garage Band and finally, put it on the Web with Dreamweaver.

What fast food is not: fresh, local, sustainable.

Desired Outcome

I hope viewers take a new view on the importance of quality food decisions.  I want the images to contrast the decisions that can be made, for example the iconic, American, homemade apple pie verses a mass produced, square, frozen, reheated apple pie from a fast food chain.  To conclude the project, I want viewers to realize how easy it is to make quality food choices so I ended with this quote: “You don’t have to cook fancy or complicated masterpieces, just good food from fresh ingredients” –Julia Child.
