Project Strategy & Approach

I want to tell the story of the local urban and community farms and gardens that are emerging all over the country. Not only do these allow urban populations to have access to affordable produce, but they also create a sense of community for the people who tend to them. Some of the farms and gardens are cared for by children’s community groups, and the work instills nutritional principles and an appreciation for a variety of fresh fruit and vegetables. The farms and gardens focus on organic, sustainable farming, and many times they renew the soil in previously contaminated areas. The leftover produce is often sold at local markets, providing the farmers with supplemental income that can be put back into the gardens or used to support the families. By having access to the farms and gardens, the community’s diet improves dramatically and it can afford to eat nutritious food that builds health and prolongs life.

Project Tagline

Healthy abundance grows, community harvests benefits.

Desired Outcome

My story will be provocative and will make people want to take action to plant and nurture urban farm and garden projects in their own communities. I will convey the message that residents in urban communities will enjoy many benefits from tending community farms and gardens. Among these are an abundant supply of fresh produce, nutritious food to promote health, economic benefits from affordable food and garden profits, and a stronger sense of community. Even people who don't reside in urban areas can still support community farms and gardens by purchasing produce at local markets that support the gardens and helping to raise awareness about the projects. The tone will be uplifting and inspirational, but will also be serious and convey the urgency of community action by demonstrating the numerous benefits of urban community farms and gardens.
